After breakfast we head to Tetouan, visiting traditional villages of the Jbala region amid the breeze and fresh hill air. We arrive in Chefchaouen and walk its medina and famous square with its markets. Overnight in a local hotel. (112 km)

We visit the old Roman site of Volubilis and Meknes, another imperial city with its historical sites, before continuing to Fes, where we stay overnight. (277 km)

With a local guide we explore the Fes medina, one of the world's largest and oldest cities: narrow streets with the aroma of spices, colorful carpets and crafts, the Royal Palace, the tanneries and the potters' workshops. Lunch in a traditional restaurant in the heart of the medina.

We cross the Middle Atlas through forests, plains and Berber villages to the Sahara. Lunch in Midelt and winding roads above the Ziz River; we pass kasbahs, palm groves and Er-Rachidia to Merzouga, the pearl of the desert. At sunset, a camel ride to the dunes and a night in a bivouac camp with a fine dinner. (469 km)

An expedition across the dunes between Merzouga's two oases, the Berber nomad lands and Khamlia village. A camel ride to watch the sunset and a night in nomadic tents in a beautiful oasis. (45 km)

After the desert sunrise, back to the hotel for a shower and breakfast. We visit the Rissani souk, then on to Alnif and the Todra Gorges, walking along the canyon streams. We continue to the Dades Gorges for an overnight in a local riad. (269 km)

To the High Atlas via Ouarzazate and a visit to the Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, a film location for Lawrence of Arabia, Jesus of Nazareth and Gladiator. Lunch at the kasbah and, in the afternoon, the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Marrakech, with an overnight in a riad. (326 km)
